“We trust the Indian economy, we will invest here”, says HH the Emir
HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is playing a pivotal role in international affairs — presiding over reconciliation talks between Afghanistan and Pakistan-supported Taliban and as an active member of the US-led coalition against ISIS.
In India, as the first Arab leader to engage with the Modi government, HH Sheikh Tamim took time off to chat with The Times of India in his first ever interview — about investing in India, about fighting terrorism and the World Cup.
HH the Emir explained that the relationship between Qatar and India is not confined to gas. They are far beyond that. In Qatar, there are about 631,000 Indians employed, from laborers to doctors and engineers. “We owe the Indians who have been helping to develop our country for many years”, HH the Emir pointed out. Qatar trusts the Indian economy, so it will invest in India.
HH the Emir is looking forward to the political conversation with India. They will discuss the current situation in this region. Governments are changing, the Arab Spring started five years ago and is still continuing. Problems with terrorist movements will be also faced.
In the case of Syria, HH the Emir completely disagrees with the regime of Bashar al Assad. He has been facing his own people with weapons, killing his own people. HH the Emir also criticized the common assumption the problem only exists between terrorist movements and the regime. “There are millions of people in between. Some of those terrorist movements grew strong because of the killing environment in Syria. What did you expect when people are on the streets and demonstrating and being met by chemical weapons and bombs. In this atmosphere, people become fighters and extremists”, HH the Emir deplored. According to HH the Emir the only way out is a peaceful solution but without this president Assad.
Concerning the financial basis of terror groups like ISIS, HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani said that “we in Qatar, I can assure you, have laws to prevent that and we are doing the utmost to prevent helping terrorist movements.”
Broaching the issue of the labor conditions in connections with the World Cup, HH the Emir confirmed that Qatar is very serious about the labor law. “We’ve been very strict with employers. Many big countries have been blacklisted because they are not going according to the law. We are changing the laws and things are becoming much and much better now.”
Qatar has been hosting big sport events for many years. They have a national sports day in Qatar. HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is a sports fan as well.
