Reforms of employment protection act
Qatar has confirmed its plans to abolish the Kafala system. Regarding a report of the Human Rights Watch organization, the ministry for Labor and Social Affairs once again announced upcoming improvements of foreign workers’ rights.
Following laws are included in the reform package:
Should employers violate the employment protection act, every foreign worker has the possibility to contact public authorities. Furthermore, foreign workers are authorized to make an application for leaving the country without a previous agreement of their employer. The practice of confiscating workers’ passports will be prosecuted more severely. Modern technologies, such as an integrated GPS-System, will enable an efficient control of the employment protection acts. The department for the protection of wages has a lock on timely wages transfer and will punish employers, who are violating the law.
