The Emir

His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani (in office since 2013) is the Emir of Qatar.


Head of State is the Emir of Qatar. He is also Chief Executive and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. The system of government is considered a constitutional monarchy, in which the succession remains within the Al Thani family. The Emir appoints both the Prime Minister and the Cabinet.

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani

Sheikh Tamim was born on June 3, 1980 in Doha. He is the fourth son of HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and his wife, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser.
Educated in England at Harrow and Sherborne School and subsequently after graduating from Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1998, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant of the Qatar Armed Forces. He was appointed deputy commander-in-chief of Qatar’s armed forces in 2009.
Other posts held by Sheikh Tamim include chairman of the Supreme Council for the Environment and Natural Reserves, chairman of the Supreme Education Council, and chairman of the board of directors of the Qatar Investment Authority.
He is the eighth Emir of the State of Qatar. He became Emir of Qatar on 25 June 2013 after his father’s abdication.
