Poetry at the Diwan: Ashjan Shaarani presents her new work „The Naked Drums of Aphrodite“
On Saturday 28 April, the Embassy of Qatar to Germany invited the Syrian-German poet, Ashjan Shaarani to present her new work „The Naked Drums of Aphrodite“ at the Arabic Cultural House the Diwan. Guest of honour was His Excellency Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, ambassador of Qatar to Germany.
The presentation started with a welcome speech by His Excellency, who emphasized the important role played by poetry in Arab society and the intercultural dialogue, stating that: “Poetry in our Arab region is important to welcome and speak the members of society, and this activity will undoubtedly uncover the common denominator between the Arab world and Germany.”
Furthermore, His Excellency emphasized the important role of the Diwan – the Arabic Cultural House in this intercultural exchange, arguing that the Diwan “is a platform for all Arabs and Germans, for the cultural exchange, the dialogue between our peoples, the introduction of the old Arabic culture into German society and the building of trust bridges between East and West.”
Ms Shaarani then recited from her new work and elaborated on her poems and the dominant themes: her longing for Damascus, love and betrayal. In between Ms Shaarani’s recitations, the artist Al Amin treated the public to a musical performance of traditional Arabic songs some of which dated back to 12th century Andalusia.
