Ambassador´s Briefing: Sports diplomacy in Qatar´s foreign policy
On Wednesday 9 May, His Excellency Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Germany, gave an exclusive lecture on the role of sports diplomacy in Qatar’s foreign policy at the Arabic Cultural House – The Divan, in the presence of young representatives of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für auswärtige Politik (DGAP).
Part of a lecture series called the „Ambassador’s briefing“, the event started with a presentation of Qatar´s National Sport Strategy and then the discussion continued with an open Q&A session with the audience.
H.E. the Ambassador elaborated on Qatar´s foreign policy, presenting the four pillars of the Qatar National Vision 2030: social, human, economic and environmental development, focusing on sport´s strong connection to all these sectors. The National Strategy on sports has been articulated through two main branches: launching social events and activities open to the public and developing elite sports and large international events.
By organizing social events, Qatar aims to bring the nation closer together and support healthy routines. H.E. the Ambassador also highlighted that Qatar is the only country to have established a Sport Day as a national holiday, in order to encourage citizens´ interest in sports and healthy living.
